99px-Philadelphia76ersLRSM graduate students Matthew Lohr and Daniel Beller brought liquid crystals science to the public at the Philadelphia 76ers’ “Science at the Sixers” night on February 18, 2014. Organized by Science Cheerleader, SciStarter, The Franklin Institute, and the Philadelphia Education Fund, the event brought fans of all ages face to face with scientists and engineers for tabletop demonstrations. Matt and Dan helped fans explore polarized light and the workings of LCD screens through hands-on activities with polarizing film, liquid crystal samples, and everyday materials like corn syrup and plastic wrap. Science Night featured interactive science exhibits on the concourse, a halftime performance by the Science Cheerleaders, and an in-game citizen science project for research on the Space Station.
