Workshop On
Knowledge Networking Processes
Philadelphia, PA
June 9 and 10, 1997
The first workshop to be held in response to
the National Science Foundation's KDI Initiative,
'Distributed Heterogeneous Knowledge Networks', was conducted during the 8th and 9th of May, 1997 in Boulder, Colorado. The second workshop in the series 'Knowledge Networking Processes' will be held at the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA on June 9 and 10, 1997. This web-site provides basic information on the workshop and will provide a summary of the results after its conclusion.
The third workshop in this series is entitled "Human Dimensions
of Knowledge Networking." It will be held in Santa Barbara, CA, on June
19 and 20, 1997.
Workshop Results
The workshop was focused on these themes:
I- Science Issues and Barriers to Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Collaboration
II- Technology issues, existing enabling infrastructures, targeted areas for enhancements
III- Ethical, legal and social implications, unintended consequences
These groups discussed in three sessions spread over the two days. In addition, individual groups met in parallel sessions to consider specific recommendations. A summary of the findings is given below.
