Workshop Background
Workshop Background
The National Science Foundation requested funding in FY 1998
to undertake the KDI initiative. This initiative is an intellectual focus
for collaborative, multidisciplinary thinking on three complimentary
aspects of KDI:
- Learning and Intelligent Systems (LIS)
- New Challenges in Computation (NCC)
- Knowledge Networking (KN)
To help sharpen the research agenda for KN, three workshops are planned on:
-
Distributed Heterogeneous Knowledge Networking
- Knowledge Networking Process
- Human Dimensions of Knowledge Networking; Access, Usability, and
Impact
Relation to Other Workshops
Within the broad context of KN, each workshop will explore
to varying degrees the following aspects of Knowledge Networking:
- The need for resources to enable the effective use of widely varying data
content in a network environment;
- Knowledge Networking Processes essential to deal with information with
widely varying content, time, and distribution scales;
- Human dimensions to Knowledge Networking communities; and
- Partnerships within the public and non-public sectors of society.
