The LRSM is collaborating with the Center for Neutron Research at NIST, UCSB, Hughes, DuPont and AlliedSignal in building a Filter-analyzer Neutron Spectrometer (FANS), with spectral range 10-200 meV and detection sensitivity of less than 10 mg hydrogen. This will be the most sensitive machine in the world in the 10-100 meV range. Phase-1 (half the detectors, see figure) is now operational, with the remaining sector and upgraded monochromator scheduled for completion during 2000. This new SEF will be available to other MRSECs through Collaborative Research Agreements with NIST. FANS will be used to study intra- and intermolecular vibrations in liquid crystals, polymers, catalysts, and novel materials such as nanotubes.
