The Interface Between Biology and Materials Science

Living cells are packed with myriads of molecules that self assemble into a daunting variety of structures, from lipid membranes to cytoskeletal networks, that carry out the functions of life. These structures and their functions provide models for new nonbiolgical materials. Materials science and related fields provide new methods of probing biological systems and new ways of thinking about their properties. This interplay between biology and materials, which has emerged as a frontier area of science, will be the subject of this symposium

Invited Speakers:

Didier Chatenay - Universite Louis Pasteur
Dennis Discher - University of Pennsylvania
William Gelbart - Dept. of Chemistry, UCLA
Paul Janmey - University of Pennsylvania
Fred MacKintosh - Dept. of Physics, Univeristy of Michigan
